Communication is central to human life, yet it leaves humans vulnerable misinformation and manipulation. Humans have therefore evolved a suite of psychological mechanisms for the evaluation speakers their messages. Here, we test key hypothesized function these epistemic vigilance mechanisms: selective remembering links between messages that are inconsistent with preexisting beliefs. What is More Memorable, Counterintuitive Concepts Interpreted Metaphorically or Literally?
A survey of randomly selected sample of television advertisements indicated that a significant number of these ads contain counterintuitive concepts. This makes sense in light of recent findings that suggest that minimally counterintuitive ideas are more memorable than intuitive ideas. However, a subsequent experiment performed to investigate the role of context in the memorability of such conc...
متن کاملConcepts are more than percepts: the case of action verbs.
Several regions of the posterior-lateral-temporal cortex (PLTC) are reliably recruited when participants read or listen to action verbs, relative to other word and nonword types. This PLTC activation is generally interpreted as reflecting the retrieval of visual-motion features of actions. This interpretation supports the broader theory, that concepts are comprised of sensory-motor features. We...

This paper examines people's reasoning about identity continuity (i.e., how people decide that a particular object is the same object over time) and its relation to previous research on how people value one-of-a-kind artifacts, such as artwork. We propose that judgments about the continuity of artworks are related to judgments about the continuity of individual persons because art objects are s...

He contrasts this position with the classical view that emotion categories have necessary and sufficient conditions. The focal issue concerns whether the two views of emotion concepts that Russell contrasts really are incompatible. Reasons a...
